World Down Syndrome Day observed at SDH Bhaderwah

DODA, March 21:

The District Health Society Doda on 21-03-2023 organized an awareness programme at SDH Bhaderwah to observe World Down Syndrome Day.

The day being a global awareness day, has been observed to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down Syndrome.

CMO Doda Dr A H Zargar presided over the programme besides BMO Bhaderwah Dr Mohd Ashraf Kuchay, Medical Officers and Paramedical Staff of the block were present on the occasion.

Speaking on the event, CMO Doda Dr A H Zargar narrated the aims and objectives of the programme. He said there are some disabilities where persons with disabilities are said to be responsible for their disability. But in case of Down Syndrome the reason of disability is genetic make up. It is out of the intervention by doctors because so far from thousands of years since existence of human race the down syndrome affected people have not been treated and the children with down syndrome has been continuously getting birth in the world. Hence we cannot accuse parents of children facing down syndrome or the person facing children with down syndrome that because of their fault or mistake the Disability happened. Thus we should be empathetic towards the children facing down syndrome and safeguard their rights, Zargar added.

Other speaker, said that children with down’s Syndrome face disability because of trisomy in 21st chromosome. Thus these children have evident differences in face than non disable people, added that we should take collective effor said that we should not segregate children on basis of facial expressions or differences as all the children are equal and have equal rights.

Meanwhile, CMO Doda Dr Zargar also met some down syndrome persons on the occasion, to make them feel that they are equally treated as compared with normal persons with dignity and respect.
